How to Choose Heat Transfer Paper for Fabric and Craft Projects

Choose the right transfer paper by printer type, fabric color, material, image direction, wash durability, and project scale.

The right heat transfer paper depends on five facts: your printer, the color of the fabric, the fiber or surface, the artwork, and how the finished item will be used. Get one of those wrong and even careful pressing can produce a dull image, visible background, reversed text, poor adhesion, or a design that does not survive washing.

The short answer

Before buying transfer paper, write down:

  1. Inkjet, laser, or sublimation printer
  2. Light or dark fabric
  3. Cotton, cotton blend, synthetic fabric, wood, ceramic, glass, or another surface
  4. Household iron or heat press
  5. One-time craft, wearable item, gift, or production run

Then buy a paper explicitly made for that combination. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for print settings, mirroring, trimming, temperature, pressure, time, peeling, and washing. Instructions are part of the product, not optional advice.

1. Match the paper to the printer

Inkjet and laser printers use different technologies and heat. A paper designed for one may fail or even create printer problems in the other. Confirm the exact printer type and review both the transfer-paper and printer documentation.

Sublimation is another process. It typically requires sublimation ink and a compatible coated surface or high-polyester fabric. A standard home inkjet with ordinary ink does not become a sublimation printer because sublimation paper is loaded into it.

2. Choose for light or dark fabric

Light-fabric transfer paper is often designed so the fabric becomes the white area of the image. It works best on white and compatible light colors. On dark fabric, those transparent areas disappear and colors can become muddy.

Dark-fabric paper generally uses an opaque transfer layer so white and bright colors remain visible. That also means the edge and unprinted background may show. Trim deliberately and design the shape as part of the finished look.

Always check the individual product instructions. The required image direction and peel method may differ between light and dark products.

3. Confirm the fabric or surface

“Fabric” is too broad. Cotton, cotton-poly blends, performance fabrics, nylon, canvas, and treated garments can respond differently to heat and adhesives. Seams, pockets, coatings, moisture, and texture can also affect the bond.

Read the fiber label and test an inconspicuous area or spare item. For a hard-surface project, use a product specifically intended for wood, ceramic, glass, or the named material. Do not assume instructions for a T-shirt apply to a mug or sign.

4. Design for the transfer method

Use the correct image orientation. Some products require mirroring before printing; others do not. Text is the easiest way to catch a mistake, so add a small direction marker to the test print.

Print at the resolution and media setting recommended by the manufacturer. Give the ink any specified drying time. Trim when required, round sharp corners where useful, and keep important details away from an edge that will be cut by hand.

For dark-fabric paper, remember that white in the file may become white transfer material. For light-fabric paper, unprinted areas may reveal the garment color.

5. Control heat, pressure, and time

A household iron can work for products designed for it, but it creates pressure and temperature by hand. Use a hard, heat-safe surface rather than a padded ironing board if the instructions say so. Cover the entire design with deliberate, overlapping pressure and follow the exact timing.

A heat press provides more repeatable temperature, pressure, and dwell time, which matters for multiple items. Calibrate the press, let it reach a stable temperature, and make a test garment whenever the paper, blank, or settings change.

More heat is not automatically better. Too little can cause lifting; too much can scorch the fabric, damage the transfer, or distort color.

6. Follow the peel and care instructions

Hot-peel, warm-peel, and cold-peel products are not interchangeable. Use a timer and follow the named method. Let the finished item rest for the recommended period before washing.

Care guidance often includes turning the garment inside out, using cool or warm water, avoiding bleach, and limiting dryer heat. Store remaining paper flat in its package and away from humidity.
